We will meet at 11:15am EST at the Munising Falls Visitor Center. You can walk less than a mile to see the falls. Then head back to the parking lot to change clothes in a restroom with flushing toilets and running water. At 11:45 we will drive 15 minutes to Miner's Castle Point where you will have a little time to see the overlook and then hop on the shuttle at 12:30 to the trailhead start at Log Slide around 1:45pm.
Log Slide is on top of a huge sand dune. You can take a gorgous photo here (photo left) and in the distance see Au Sable Lighthouse which is where we'll head next 2.5 miles down the trail. There's actually a porta potty here you can use and a water spicket to refill water (so only start with a bottle - less weight is easier moving).
Then we'll go about 3.5 miles and camp at Benchmark which is right next to the beach. It is a great place to make dinner, skip rocks, and watch the sunset.
We will get up, make breakfast, and pack up. You won't need to filter water because in half a mile we will go through Twelve Mile Beach Campground and they have a spicket. You can also use the vault toilets and get rid of garbage.
We will go about 7 miles and get to Trapper's Lake. Trapper's Lake is beautiful and warmer than Lake Superior. (Every time I finish my swim a huge snapping turtle comes over to the shoreline to say hi.) Next, we'll hop back on the trail, head back along Lake Superior and go about 8 miles to Chapel Beach. We will see Chapel Rock (photo left) and set up camp.
The night is free to eat, swim, skip rocks, and explore. There are nice, new pit toilets here. Bring your own TP.
We can make breakfast above the beach, overlooking the water, as the sun rises in the trees. Then we'll filer water and pack up.
In the first 2 miles there will be a lot of beautiful overlooks down to the water below and the sun will make the cliffs light up in beauty and warmth. This trail continues to follow the shoreline through the trees with places we can pop out and look over the edge and out into Lake Superior.
At about 8 miles from our start, we'll come to Miner's Beach and Falls. The sand is soft and white. We can walk along the sand in the water (photo left) or above the beach on the soft, sandy trail. Then our last mile climbs back up the bluff and we have about a mile to our end at Miner's Castle Overlook (photo below)
