We will meet at 11:30am EST at the Munising Falls Visitor Center. You can walk less than a mile to see the falls. Then head back to the parking lot to change clothes in a restroom with flushing toilets and running water. Fill your water here. At 12pm est we will drive 10 minutes to Sand Point Ranger Station where you will have a little time to see the beach and then hop on the shuttle at 12:30 to the trailhead start at Grand Sable around 2:30pm.
You can use pit toilets and then we will take off down the trail! In about a mile you'll come our by the blue Grand Sable Lake and have the option to climb up a sandune and see the beautiful Lake Superior in the distance (photo on left). Then we'll fastpack about 7 miles and come out by Log Slide on top of a huge sand dune. There is a pit toilet and water spicket here. You can take a gorgous photo on top of the sand dune and in the distance see Au Sable Lighthouse which is where we'll head next - 2 miles down the trail to camp.
We will enjoy the evening on Lake Superior and make dinner at camp or on the beach. You may take an after dinner stroll on the beach as the sun sets. It's a great place to skip rocks. There is a pit toilet. Bring your own TP. You can filter water from the lake or hike a half mile down to the lighthouse and fill your water at a spicket.
You will wake up with a sunrise coming up over Lake Superior. We can make breakfast at camp, or my favorite thing to do is pack up and go a half mile down to the lighthouse to make breakfast on the beach. It's also helpful to refill water and you can use the porta potty if you like. (Though we will find a water spicket and pit toilets at 1.5 and 4 miles down the trail as we go through a couple campgrounds).
You have an option to go the next half mile on the sandy beach or on the trail. We will then fastpack 12 miles to Trapper's Lake where we will take a break and swim.
Trapper's Lake is beautiful and warmer than Lake Superior. (Every time I finish my swim a huge snapping turtle comes over to the shoreline to say hi.)
We will pack up and have breakfast at camp and then head out down the trail. After about 8 miles we will come to Chapel Beach. We will see Chapel Rock (photo left). There are pit toilets here, and you can filter water if you need to.
The next 5 miles have gorgeous sandstone overlooks and views of the lake. We can take a break and use a pit toilet and filter water at Mosquito Beach.
Then it's 3 more miles to Potato Patch where we can set up camp for the night. We can set up our tents, and then go less than a mile down to Miner's Beach for water and a beautiful place to make dinner, enjoy the beach, and see Miner's Falls.
The night is free to eat, swim, skip rocks, and explore.
We will pack up and can have breakfast at camp or down on the soft sand of Miner's Beach (photo left). It's 2 miles to Miner's Castle where there is a beautiful overlook (photo below), flush toilets, and running water.
Then we'll go 7 miles to finish our trip at Sand Point. Congratulations! You did it!
